Dedicated to building a strong foundation in the arts, Studio 691 School of Dance is a non-competition institute focused on EDUCATION and EXPOSURE to all dance forms for children and adults. Studio 691 offers distinctive dance programs that motivate students through rewarding, challenging, and energetic classes.

Developing disciplined students, concentrating on dance fundamentals, emphasizing vocabulary, exploring choreography, and positively motivating dancers to excel are the core values of the YMCA Dance Program. Classes include Ballet, Pre-Pointe, Pointe, Jazz, Modern, Tap, Irish Step, and more for ages 2 through adult. Studio 691 focuses on individual student growth. Students who show potential for professional careers in dance are carefully prepared in our Dance Companies for high school conservatory and college acceptance.

Music Education:

Studio 691 School of Music and Theatre Education offers opportunities for individuals to explore and refine their talents musically and dramatically through private instruction. The accomplished faculty includes musicians and educators currently working in the field of classical music and musical theatre.

Dance: 

Studio 691 School of Dance provides an environment where your child thrives as a dancer and grows as a young individual with qualities including discipline, respect, responsibility, and grace. We commit to providing high level instruction at low prices all year long. The Y’s Performing Arts wing includes four dance studios where practice is perfected to perform on the Y’s in-house stage. We instill self-confidence and poise through performance.

Posture, rhythm, and motor skills are developed alongside self confidence in movement. Beginning tap concepts, patterns, and vocabulary are taught.

Develop the concepts of ballet including proper turn out, coordination, and spatial awareness with a specific focus on class etiquette.

Irish Dance I

Establish familiarity with the music while learning the fundamentals essential to traditional Irish Dance, including foot placement, timing, body alignment, and basic steps in the reel and jig.

Great for developing gross motor skills, rhythm, and coordination. Tap I consists of warm-up exercises, across the floor combinations, and rhythmic phrases.

Learn proper placement, alignment, balance, technique, and control. Focus is on improving strength and body positioning in barre and center work, as well as learning the vocabulary.

Irish Hardshoe 2

Wed. 7-8:30pm 

Evolving mastery of traditional movement concentrating on technique, proficiency, speed, and carriage, with a focus on timing and listening skills. Traditional céilí group dances are introduced. Technique for producing trebles and basic percussive rhythms are introduced and strengthened. Dance tempos include treble reels, jigs, and hornpipes along with traditional set pieces.

Jazz 2

Understanding body awareness, opposition techniques, and pirouettes are an integral piece of this discipline. Complex movement patterns challenge the dancer’s mind and body.

Develop full body integration with strength and dynamic quality for performance in a creative, energetic, and positive environment.

Explore coordination, time steps, beginning turns, short combinations, and showmanship along with rhythm and timing within a wide range of musical accompaniment.

Develop movement sequences, port de bras, and balance while learning proper extension of the legs and shape of feet. Increase core strength and flexibility.

Focus on flexibility, body alignment, core strength, and increased body awareness. Introduction to components of the Advanced Jazz warm-up are incorporated. Pirouettes, opposition techniques, and complex across the floor patterns challenge the dancer’s mind and body.

Develop proper jazz technique through kicks, leaps, turn variations, jumps, and multiple pirouettes. Precision style jazz is taught incorporating strong lines and quick, sharp movements.

Explore movement and understand the alignment of the body, the importance of technique, and quality of performance. Floor work, partner work, and full body movement integration is incorporated.

Pre-Pointe

Take the next important step in training for those serious about dance and focused on Ballet. Continue to develop overall technique and build stretch, strength, and stamina. Dancers must be 12 years of age and enrolled in two ballet classes per week. No registration fee for dancers who meet age and class requirements.

Instill a strong skill set by developing technique and sound clarity with an added focus on increasing speed and building vocabulary. Personal responsibility in memorization of steps and using energy and enthusiasm is expected.

Character, discipline, hard work, and technique are important attributes that Company Members possess. These dancers are challenged in their technique and pushed to the next level. A large commitment of time is required for this group. Master classes, trips, and performance opportunities are available.

Company dancers are required to take two ballet classes, one modern class, one jazz class, two pointe classes, and two rehearsal periods in assigned levels.
