THE AOA SOCIAL CIRCLE - FEBRUARY

Dear AOA Members,

This month in the Active Older Adult Department feels like a gentle pause and a quiet shift. Winter is still very much with us outside, but inside the Wyckoff YMCA there’s warmth—familiar faces, easy conversations, and that steady sense of community that carries us through the colder days.

In the Commons, the new activities are beginning to settle in and find their rhythm. The French Conversation Group feels relaxed and welcoming, a space where beginners and seasoned speakers sit side by side, practicing, laughing, and learning together without pressure. The Italian Conversation Group is doing the same—slowly growing, inviting curiosity, and offering connection through language and shared culture.

Looking ahead, we’re also excited to launch the AOA Classical Music Appreciation Mini-Session in Session III. Led by the Performing Arts Team, it promises to be a reflective, engaging space where members can listen, discuss, and explore music in a thoughtful way. It’s a new offering that feels like it will bring something special to the AOA community.

Even as we focus on the current month, there’s a quiet excitement building for the AOA St. Patrick’s Day Lunch on March 11. Even in the planning stages, it already feels like one of those moments that will bring laughter, music, and a little mischief—something to look forward to as winter stretches on. Months like this remind me that even when it’s cold outside, the connection we have here is more than enough to keep us warm.

Visit Us in The Commons!

The Commons is the go-to spot for AOA Members (Age 62+)—a warm and welcoming space where acquaintances become friends, and friends become family. Come by the lower level of the Y, grab a cup of coffee, tea, or water, pick up a good book, meet a friend, or join one of the many fun and engaging activities we have planned. We’d love to see you!

With Gratitude,

MaryJoan and the AOA Team

Member Spotlight: Joyce Z.

For the past 16 years, Joyce has been a shining presence at the Wyckoff YMCA—and a true example of what it means to live the Y spirit.

Joyce loves the Wyckoff YMCA because of her deep dedication to health and wellness. You’ll often find her staying active in the Y’s general exercise classes, as well as enthusiastically participating in the Active Older Adult (AOA) general exercise classes. For Joyce, the Y isn’t just a place to work out—it’s a community that supports her well-being and keeps her motivated.

Over the years, Joyce has made so many friends here at the Wyckoff YMCA. The connections she’s built and the sense of belonging she feels are a big part of what keeps her coming back, week after week.

An important and valued member of the Active Older Adults community, Joyce also gives back in meaningful ways. She proudly serves on the AOA Advisory Committee, helping to shape programs and experiences that enrich the lives of fellow members.

Joyce’s generosity truly shines through her volunteer work. She is always ready to lend a hand at Wyckoff Day, the Annual Phone-A-Thon, and during AOA event setup—ensuring every event feels welcoming and well organized.

We are incredibly grateful for Joyce’s years of membership, her warm spirit, and her commitment to making the Wyckoff YMCA a stronger, more connected community. Thank you, Joyce, for all that you do!

Table Tennis Open Play

The Wyckoff YMCA’s Table Tennis Open Play is full of energy, laughter, and just the right amount of friendly competition. Three times a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays—the room comes alive as a vibrant group of members gathers around the tables, paddles in hand and smiles ready.

Whether players come for the fun, the fitness, or the thrill of a competitive rally, there’s a shared spirit that keeps everyone coming back. It’s a welcoming space where quick reflexes meet camaraderie, and where every game—no matter the score—is another chance to connect, move, and enjoy the moment. At the Y, table tennis is more than a game—it’s a community in motion.
