THE AOA SOCIAL CIRCLE - JUNE

2026 ANNUAL CAMPAIGN

The Annual Campaign, held each year in the first quarter, is the Y’s general appeal to the Community-At-Large. Primarily to support our philanthropic work, your financial support assists the Y in responding to the ongoing requests for help we receive daily. Your Membership Dues and Program Fees go toward covering the Y’s operating expenses, but your donations for the Campaign go toward helping your neighbors stay healthy and well. Connected by a shared vision, Staff at all levels work with one another to engage committed Volunteers, YMCA Members, and Donors to make a lasting impact on the communities served by our Y.

DONATE TODAY!

Dear AOA Members,

As we move through this month together, I continue to reflect on how fortunate we are to be part of such a vibrant and engaged AOA community. One of the things that makes our department so special is the shared desire to continue learning, growing, and connecting with one another at every stage of life.

Our monthly theme, “Celebrating Our American Heritage Through Knowledge,” beautifully reminds us that educational opportunities are woven throughout every aspect of YMCA programming — beginning with our youngest preschool learners and continuing through the many enriching experiences offered within our Active Older Adult community.

Each day, I see our Commons filled with conversation, curiosity, laughter, and friendship. Whether members are participating in the French Conversation Group, Italian Conversation Group, exploring the Brain Fitness Wall, discussing current trends in the Bulls & Bears Stock Market Club, or sharing perspectives in Book Club, there is a wonderful spirit of lifelong learning taking place all around us.

My vision for the AOA Department has always been to create a welcoming space where learning is not only educational, but also social, inspiring, and meaningful. I believe we are building exactly that together — a community where every member feels encouraged to stay curious, engaged, connected, and valued.

Thank you for continuing to make the AOA Department such a dynamic and caring place to gather, learn, and grow together.

Visit Us in The Commons!

The Commons is the go-to spot for AOA Members (Age 62+)—a warm and welcoming space where acquaintances become friends, and friends become family. Come by the lower level of the Y, grab a cup of coffee, tea, or water, pick up a good book, meet a friend, or join one of the many fun and engaging activities we have planned. We’d love to see you!

With Gratitude,

Mary Joan and the AOA Team

Member Spotlight: Robert (Rob) S.

For nearly 16 years, Robert “Rob” Stevenson has been a valued member of the Wyckoff Family YMCA community, bringing his passion for education, history, and service to those around him.

Rob currently leads the popular “This Week in History” group in the Commons, where members gather to explore fascinating historical events, stories, and discussions several times a month. His engaging approach and depth of knowledge make the program a favorite among many in our AOA community.

A lifelong educator and leader, Rob is a retired professor from Mercy College, where he began teaching in 1998. He also holds the distinguished title of Professor Emeritus of the Graduate Counseling Program at Mercy College, NY, recognizing his years of dedication and impact in higher education.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Rob is the editor of the book Children, Adolescents and Death: Questions and Answers, reflecting his thoughtful work in the field of education and human development.

We are grateful for Rob’s many contributions, his wealth of knowledge, and the warmth he brings to the YMCA community.

Class Shout-Out: Table Tennis

A big shout-out to our dedicated and enthusiastic Table Tennis players! This popular program continues to bring energy, friendly competition, laughter, and connection to our AOA community week after week.

Table Tennis takes place three times per week during Sessions I–IV, as well as throughout our Summer Session, giving members plenty of opportunities to stay active, sharpen their skills, and enjoy time with friends both old and new.

Whether you are a seasoned player or just picking up a paddle for the first time, the spirit of camaraderie and fun is always present. Thank you to everyone who helps make Table Tennis such a welcoming and vibrant part of our AOA programming!
