Summer Stingrays FAQS:

Do I have to tryout?

Yes, unless you currently are on the 2024-2025 year round Stingrays, or were selected from the Sharks Swim Team Tryouts.

How do you determine age groups for Stingrays? 

The swimmer’s age on May 31, 2025 determines the age for practices and competitions.

How old do you have to be to tryout? 

Swimmers must be 5 years old as of May 31, 2025 to be on the Stingrays.

What do I have to do at tryouts? 

All 10 and under swimmers must complete 25 yards of freestyle with rotary breathing without stopping and 25 yards of backstroke without stopping.  All 11 and over swimmers must complete 50 yards of freestyle and 50 yards of backstroke.

Do I need to join Spring Lake? 

Yes, all swim team members must have a Spring Lake family or adult child membership. 

Can I join Spring Lake as an individual? 

No, the New Jersey Pool Managers Association is the governing body of our league.  All individuals under the age of 18 must have a membership with a parent or legal guardian.

How much does it cost? 

There is a $80 fee in addition to your Spring Lake membership.

Do you have team suits?  

Yes, all swimmers are encouraged to purchase a team suit.  They must have goggles.  Team caps will be provided.

Where do I purchase the team suit? 

Team suits will be purchased through a designated Swim Shop. A Swim Shop will be available during a practice time to try on. Suits must be purchased at that time. 

How long is the season? 

The first Stingray practice is tentatively scheduled for Mon., June 24. The last practice will be held prior to the last day of county championships, which is scheduled tentatively for August 8-10.

What if I am still is school when practices begin? 

No problem, you can begin practicing as soon as your school summer vacation begins.

When is practice?  

Stingrays practice Monday through Thursday beginning at 4pm and lasting approximately an hour.

What do I need to bring to practice? 

Swimmers must wear a competitive swim suit.  All swimmers must have goggles.  All swimmers with hair past their chin must wear a swim cap.  You MUST wear sneakers and shorts over your swim suit for dryland training.  This rule will be enforced.

What happens if there is inclement weather? 

As soon as the decision is made to cancel practice, you will be sent an email.  Always check your email if there is the potential for bad weather.

Do you participate in meets? 

Yes, we are members of the Lake League.  We swim against Graydon Pool, Fair Lawn Memorial, and Radburn.  Selected swimmers are also invited to participate in the league and county championships.

When are the meets held? 

The meets are tentatively scheduled in the evenings during the week.

Do all swimmers participate in the meets? 

Yes, all swimmers will swim in the meets.

What if there is inclement weather on a day when a meet is being held? 

As soon as the decision is made to cancel a meet, you will be sent an email.  If you do not receive an email, the meet is on. 

Is it a problem if I cannot attend one of the meets?  

We encourage all swimmers to attend all meets.  You will be given a meet availability form at tryouts.  You must mark all absences on that form. If for some reason, at the last minute, you cannot attend, it is your responsibility to notify the coach in writing of your absence.

As a parent am I required to volunteer at the meets? 

Yes, all parents are required to help at three meets.  You will be given the opportunity to choose the meets you would like to volunteer for at tryouts.
